Texas Gas Prices Fluctuate; AAA Texas Monthly Fuel Gauge Report

HOUSTON--Aug. 16, 2001--Some Texas cities have seen a decrease -- others an increase -- in monthly gas price averages.
Overall, the statewide average price dropped a penny to $1.27 a gallon from a month ago. The current average is a decrease of more than 15 cents from last August's average of $1.44 a gallon.
In Texas, the highest average price for regular can be found in Dallas at $1.34 a gallon, with the cheapest being purchased in Brownsville at $1.20.
"An increase in demand and crude oil prices could cause somewhat higher gasoline prices as we near the Labor Day holiday," according to Rose Rougeau, a spokesperson for AAA Texas.
Nationally, AAA's Fuel Gauge Report shows the average price hovering at $1.40, down 4 cents since mid-July.
The top three expensive states to purchase gasoline are Hawaii ($1.97), Alaska ($1.70) and California ($1.62).
The least expensive states are South Carolina ($1.24), Georgia ($1.25) and Texas ($1.27).
AAA and AAA Texas commission their Fuel Gauge Reports as a public service. The current reports are based on data gathered by the Oil Price Information Service -- the nation's most comprehensive source of petroleum pricing information.

AAA Texas has been serving Texans since 1902. AAA Texas offers its members a full service travel agency, auto-related and financial services, as well as public safety programs and legislative advocacy.
