National Safety Council Announces Hall of Fame International Inductees

NATIONAL SAFETY COUNCIL ANNOUNCES
SAFETY AND HEALTH HALL OF FAME INTERNATIONAL INDUCTEES

Itasca, Ill. -The National Safety Council announced today that three outstanding safety professionals, James W. Brinkley and Daniel Della-Giustina of the United States and Soun-shik Chang of Korea, will be inducted into the Safety and Health Hall of Fame International (SHHOFI) class of 2001.
The Safety and Health Hall of Fame is dedicated to recognizing acclaimed leaders and pioneers for their innovative contributions to the safety, health and environmental industry worldwide. Each year a select group of outstanding individuals is nominated for this honor. The 2001 inductees join such SHHOFI luminaries as John Grimaldi (Class of 1987) and Elizabeth Dole and Henry Heimlich (1993), all of the United States; Peter Compes (1993) of the Federal Republic of Germany; Roberto Scaringella (1994), Brazil; Bernardino Ramazzini (1995), Italy; and Allan St. John Holt (1997), United Kingdom. The induction ceremony will take place during the National Safety Council's 89th Annual Congress & Expo in Atlanta on the evening of Monday, September 24.
Mr. James Brinkley pioneered research methods that benefit millions of people daily-at the workplace, on the road, at play, in the military, and even in outer space. Mr. Brinkley's superior design skills and visionary determination were put to excellent use during the development of the Space Shuttle for NASA. During the Viet Nam war, he designed Air Force systems that lowered jet-ejection spinal cord injuries from 50% to 12%. In automobile transportation, his pioneering research established the basis for the first production systems of air bag restraints. He designed the standard that led to a major reduction of injuries from snowmobile accidents. A founding member of the International Society for Fall Protection, Mr. Brinkley is the author of Fundamentals of Fall Protection.
Mr. Soun-shik Chang of the Republic of Korea began his career in government but has also served in private industry. As South Korea moved, beginning in the 1960s, from an agricultural to a chemical and industrial economic base, the country came to find that it lacked adequate safety and health regulations. Mr. Chang designed Korea's first legal structure for the protection of workers, the Industrial Safety and Health Law. Subsequently, he identified a need for an independent and professional organization to meet the increasing demand for worker safety, and he therefore became the driving force behind the establishment of the Korean Occupational Safety and Health Agency, KOSHA. Following that success, he began working to establish a research arm to study accident prevention techniques, statistics and prevention of occupational diseases, which is now known as the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute.
Dr. Daniel Della-Giustina is credited with building West Virginia University's graduate program in Safety and Environmental Management into one of the finest of its kind. His seven textbooks are standard teaching references worldwide. In the corporate arena, his writings have had major national and international impact on improving accident preventive programs: Safety professionals use his published programs as guidelines for developing, implementing and maintaining company-wide safety programs. His research recommendations to improve the safe transportation of handicapped students have been implemented by the US Department of Transportation. He identified the early warning signs of workplace violence and developed innovative contributions to address the problem. He has served on numerous committees and task forces, frequently in a leadership position.
The Safety and Health Hall of Fame International was founded in 1986 by the Veterans of Safety. This will be the fifteenth class to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. With this year's ceremony, a total of 65 people will have been honored with an induction to the Safety and Health Hall of Fame International since 1987.
Tickets to the induction dinner are available for a $75 donation per person. Proceeds go to the Safety and Health Hall of Fame International. For more information or to make reservations call the National Safety Council at (800) 621-7615.
The National Safety Council is a not-for-profit, membership organization dedicated to reducing unintentional injuries in the workplace, on the road, in homes and the community.
