Chrysler Jeep Superstores Lead Teamwork To Keep Gold Cup Races On Detroit River

DETROIT, June 24 -- One of Detroit's oldest and most visible traditions -- the Gold Cup unlimited hydroplane races on the Detroit River -- has been kept alive largely through the volunteer efforts of two groups: the Chrysler Jeep Superstores Association of Southeast Michigan and the Spirit of Detroit Thunderfest Association.

"Chrysler Jeep Superstores and its 41 independent dealers in Southeast Michigan have a decade-long tradition with The 2002 Chrysler Jeep Superstores Detroit APBA Gold Cup," said Mark Snethkamp, president, Chrysler Jeep Superstores Advertising Association; and president, Snethkamp Chrysler Jeep, Detroit. "We were determined to keep this great racing tradition alive for all the people who are thrilled and entertained by this uniquely American sport."

"Chrysler Jeep Superstores" is the title sponsor of the race event this year.

While the Spirit of Detroit volunteers have continued working behind the scenes hoping that financial support would materialize for this year's race, the Chrysler Jeep Superstores Association dug deep into its checking account to furnish that support.

Without being specific, Snethkamp said that the Chrysler Jeep Superstores Association made a major contribution to sponsor both this year's race and a boat entered in the race, "Chrysler Jeep Miss US." It will be driven by Greg Hopp. DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group is also supporting the race. The Chrysler Jeep Superstores also contribute promotional services, use of courtesy cars by race officials and competitors, and other services.

With the pledge of these contributions in place, the Spirit of Detroit Thunderfest Association was able to call on other civic and corporate organizations for a funding package to pay off debts and proceed with the organization of this summer's race.

The Spirit of Detroit Thunderfest Association is made up of more than 400 volunteer workers who actually conduct the race July 11-14. The Chrysler Jeep Superstores Association is made up of the 41 independently owned Chrysler Jeep Superstores in Southeastern Michigan.
