DEDICATION OF FAMILY CENTER SALUTES UAW AND FORD VISION FOR STRONGER FAMILIES, BETTER COMMUNITIES

LOUISVILLE, Ky., August 11, 2002 – The United Auto Workers Local 862 in partnership with the Ford Motor Company today proudly announced the grand opening of their new Family Service and Learning Center.

The Family Service and Learning Center is part of a nationwide effort by UAW and Ford to meet the diverse needs of their working families, individuals, retirees and the communities in which they reside.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the opening of the new 32,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility at 4112 Fern Valley Road, near the Louisville Assembly Plant.

This facility will serve over 14,000 Louisville area UAW-represented hourly and Ford salaried employees, retirees and their dependants and will provide a wide array of services and programs including: a top quality child development center; family and adult education programs; retiree health and wellness activities; and a volunteer support network to meet local community needs.

“The obligations of and pressures on working Americans today are immense,” said UAW Local 862 President Rocky Comito, who is co-chair of the Local Family Council at the Louisville Assembly Plant (LAP). “The Family Center services will help our members find balance in an increasingly demanding world.”

“By offering our employees opportunities for personal growth and development, we are making it easier for them to be more successful and productive at work and in their personal lives,” added Brian Griffin, LAP Human Resources Manager and co-chair of the Local Family Council at LAP.

“This family center is a great example of what can be accomplished when a strong union and a progressive company work together,” said UAW Region 3 Director Terry Thurman.

The Family Service and Learning Center will offer easily accessible, top-notch childcare. In addition, a network of community childcare providers will ensure that high quality childcare is accessible to all area UAW and Ford families.

To address larger community needs, the Family Service and Learning Center will feature a dedicated Volunteer Support Center enabling UAW and Ford workers, families and retirees to make significant contributions to the Louisville community. Partnerships are being developed with an array of local non-profit organizations including the United Way, Metro Parks, the Jefferson County Public Schools, Day Springs and Habitat for Humanity.
