General Motors Hosts Career Day At Western International High School

Detroit, MI - On Friday, October 11th, the General Motors Hispanic Initiative Team (GM HIT) will host a career day to promote education and career opportunities in the automotive industry within Detroit's Hispanic community. Students at Western International High School will be exposed to automotive engineering, design and marketing. GM HIT will also donate $ 7,500 to the school to buy needed textbooks and reference materials.

"One of our goals is to build a strong relationship with the Hispanic community. A career day helps to foster educational importance and to introduce students to great GM cars and trucks " said Diane N. DeHoyos, GM HIT president, and cost reduction manager for GM worldwide purchasing.

The career day event begins at 8:00 a.m. with an opening address from Diane N. DeHoyos. Joe Ponce, GM plant manager at Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Center, will also be addressing the students at the end of the career day.

Students will participate in breakout sessions that simulate real world scenarios in today's automotive industry. An egg drop exercise coupled with a racecar competition will test skills for engineering design and structural integrity. A marketing clinic will let the students participate in the process of gaining customer feedback for new products. Students can practice design skills in a Lego competition. Several of GM's hot new cars will be displayed including the Hummer H2, Saturn ION, Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire.

The GM Hispanic Initiative Team was established in 1999 to reach out as GM Ambassadors to the Hispanic community and support GM business objectives. GM HIT initiatives include professional skill development, educational outreach, recruiting, marketing and community service.

Western International High School is located at 1500 Scotten Avenue, between W. Vernor and Porter in Detroit, Michigan. Career day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at noon.
