Chrysler Recall: 143,500 Minivans

DETROIT, Oct 15, 2002 Reuters repored that DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler arm said on Tuesday it was recalling about 143,500 minivans to fix fuel tanks that could leak.

Chrysler said the recall involves 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans built in Windsor, Ontario, between September 2001 and March 11, 2002. Some 117,415 of the minivans were sold in the United States, with most of the rest sold in Canada and Mexico.

The automaker said a bad weld at a fuel tank supplier's plant caused the problem, and that about half of the vehicles would receive a new fuel tank. Chrysler said it had received no reports of fires or injuries related to the problem.

Owners of the affected minivans should begin receiving letters about the recall early next month, Chrysler said.
