Delphi Technologies Enhance Cadillac XLR

TROY, Mich., Oct. 30 -- General Motors' Cadillac XLR will hit showrooms in the spring of 2003 with several innovative Delphi Corp. technologies designed to enhance the two-seat roadster's performance, as well as occupant safety, comfort and convenience.

Performance and Safety

The XLR will deliver extraordinary responsiveness and agility with Delphi's MagneRide(TM) (Magnetic Ride Control) and TRAXXAR(TM) (StabiliTrak) chassis systems. Delphi integrates MagneRide and TRAXXAR on the XLR, helping it maintain its luxury car ride and performance car handling. This integration of two or more electronically controlled chassis systems for enhanced vehicle safety, performance and control is part of Delphi's Unified Chassis Control (UCC) approach. The result is better control and ride comfort in a wide variety of driving conditions, as well as overall performance consistent with the character of the XLR.

Using sensor input to respond in real time to road and driving conditions, MagneRide is a high-performance, semi-active suspension system that provides fast, smooth, continuously variable damping. It is a cost-effective and reliable package that reduces body motion and increases tire/road contact on all types of surfaces, and brings benefits to both luxury and performance vehicles.

MagneRide provides improved comfort, performance and safety from one revolutionary system, through:

Improved wheel control; Minimized vehicle body motion for a flatter ride and more precise, responsive handling; Reduction of small road disturbances; Improved load transfer characteristics, providing better roll control and steering precision during sudden, high-speed maneuvers; and A quieter, more refined ride due to improved road isolation Delphi's TRAXXAR helps provide improved, more predictable vehicle response, and offers enhanced stability and driver ability to avoid or minimize the likelihood of a collision. With individual wheel brake intervention, it helps decrease or prevent vehicle spins and excessive understeer.

Delphi's MAGNASTEER(TM) Magnetic Assist Steering System is a speed- variable power-assisted steering system, combining conventional hydraulics with patented Delphi electro-magnetic control technology. This technology provides the widest range of steering effort variation and tunability, which has been reconfigured to meet the specific steering "feel" and handling for the XLR.

Comfort and Convenience

In addition to stability enhancement and steering assist technologies, the new XLR will also offer "cruise control with vision" through Delphi's FOREWARN® collision warning systems Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which measures the distance and relative speed of preceding vehicles using a sophisticated microwave radar sensor mounted inside the front of the vehicle. When the cruise control is engaged, the ACC system uses throttle control and limited braking to adjust the speed to maintain a set distance from the vehicle in front, thereby reducing the frequency of manual acceleration or deceleration during changes in traffic flow compared to traditional cruise control.

Delphi is also providing HVAC and powertrain cooling with additional systems responsibility on the XLR. Expanded systems responsibility includes integrating parts such as the air conditioning refrigerant lines, duct work and coolant lines. Providing integrated parts allows Delphi to tune the entire system together, resulting in optimized design and performance characteristics for the Cadillac XLR.

XLR occupants can also tune into 100 channels of digital-quality music and other programming provided by XM Satellite Radio. Delphi's Satellite Digital Radio Receivers provide the listener with more programming and program information than traditional vehicles. A separate receiver box is used to receive the satellite signal, and the remote receiver box makes the radio capable of receiving the proprietary satellite signal through a custom chipset.
