HEAT Stops Thieves Cold With Holiday Safety Tips

LIVONIA, Mich., Nov. 25 -- The holiday shopping season has arrived and this year Help Eliminate Auto Thefts wants shoppers to be on the lookout for more than just the perfect gift. HEAT® is offering safety tips for preoccupied holiday shoppers to protect themselves from thieves looking to snatch automobiles and packages. Over the past 17 years, HEAT® has been working to keep auto theft safety top-of-mind among holiday shoppers, and thieves out of luck in Michigan.

"During the holiday rush, shoppers can be overwhelmed with holiday tasks and busy schedules, and thieves are aware of the opportunities these distractions provide," said Terri Miller, HEAT® Director. "The effects of the holiday rush -- long lines, crowded parking lots and large crowds -- can cause people to take unnecessary risks such as leaving their vehicles unlocked, parking in unlit areas and leaving their newly bought packages in plain view."

With consumer confidence on the rise, Michigan retailers are projecting an overall 4% increase in holiday sales this season, according to the Michigan Retailers Association (MRA). "A bright spot is that more retailers than last year are forecasting holiday increases," said Larry Meyer, MRA chairman and CEO.

With the predicted rise in holiday sales and shoppers, the HEAT® program reminds people that by keeping some simple safety tips in mind, they can avoid being targeted by lurking criminals and have a happy holiday season from start to finish. To help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday shopping experience for shoppers across Michigan, HEAT® has provided a list of holiday safety tips to remember while shopping this season.

People with information on auto theft are urged to call HEAT®'s confidential tip-reward line, 1-800-242-HEAT®. Since its inception in 1985, HEAT® has recovered 3,146 vehicles valued at $36,846,316, arrested over 2,566 suspects and awarded $2,463,805 to callers.

HEAT®'s Holiday Safety Tips

1. Park in well-lit areas, near sidewalks or walkways. Avoid parking near dumpsters or large vans or trucks. These obstacles decrease ability to clearly see the space around your vehicle, where thieves or carjackers could be hiding.

2. Consider using the valet service if you are out shopping alone at night at a shopping center. It costs, but your car is worth more. Leave only the ignition key with no I.D. (Keep your registration and proof of insurance in your wallet).

3. If you are shopping late at night and your car is parked in the lot, ask the store clerk if it is possible for store security to escort you to your car. Most stores will happily comply with the request.

4. If you leave purchases or wrapped gifts in the car, place them in the trunk and out of view.

5. Even if burdened down with packages, try to keep one hand free with the ignition key in hand. Look around and inside the car before getting in.

6. If threatened by a carjacker with a gun or other weapon, GIVE UP THE CAR. DON'T ARGUE. A life is more important than any car.

7. If you witness an auto theft or carjacking, call the police immediately. If you have any information regarding an auto theft or carjacking, call the HEAT® tip reward line at 1-800-242-HEAT®.
