GM: Will Recall SUV and Pickups for Wiper Problem This Summer

DETROIT May 1, 2003; Reuters reported that General Motors said on Thursday that it will recall about 1.77 million pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans to replace windshield wiper circuit boards and motor covers.

The vehicles involved in this recall are some of the 1994-1997 Chevrolet C/K and GMC Sierra pickups, and Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban/GMC Yukon and Suburban SUVs; 1995-97 Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari mid-size vans and Chevrolet/GMC full-size crew cabs; and 1996-97 Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Jimmy mid-size SUVs, and Chevrolet S10, GMC Sierra small pickup trucks. Also included in the recall is the Isuzu Motors Ltd. (Tokyo:7202.T - News) Hombre small pickup.

GM, the world's largest automaker, said that there have been no fatal injuries resulting from the faulty wipers.

The recall is an extension of windshield wiper replacement programs that GM conducted in 1998 and 2003. Vehicles that were repaired in those programs are not included in this recall.

Owners will be notified of the recall this summer and instructed to take their vehicle to a GM dealer, where the circuit board and motor cover will be replaced free of charge, GM said.
