Fuji Heavy Recalling Minivehicles Due To Fires

TOKYO July 25, 2003; Dow Jones reports that Kyodo said that Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., maker of Subaru cars, said Friday it is recalling 19,867 Samber minivehicles for free repairs after five vehicles caught fire, Kyodo News reported.

Subject to the recall are automatic-transmission models produced between March 1999 and June 2000, according to a report filed with the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry, Kyodo reported.

The first fire took place in Fukuoka Prefecture, southern Japan in December 2001. Four other fires occured across Japan between April and June this year, according to the ministry.

Fires could occur due to defective welding on parts of power transmissions which could result in oil leakage, Fuji Heavy said.
