Japanese Car Recalls Announced

NEW YORK January 21, 2004; Dow Jones reported that Nissan Motor Co. said Wednesday that it will recall a total of about 76,000 vehicles in nine models to fix defects, the Kyodo news agency reported.

In a report presented to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Nissan said eight of the nine models were recalled in 2001 due to defects in engine parts but are being recalled again as other parts have been found to be the cause of defects.

The defects in 55,342 vehicles of the eight diesel models could cause engines to stop and disable cars from restarting. The defects could also cause the brake to operate ineffectively, Kyodo reported, citing Nissan.

Subject to the recall are Sunny cars manufactured between January 1999 and April 2002, Mazda Motor Corp.'s Familia car, which was produced by Nissan between May 1999 and December 2002, and Subaru's Leone car, also made by Nissan between June 1999 and March 2001.

Nissan will also recall its AD model produced between January 1999 and December 2002, the Serena made between January 1999 and December 2001, the Presage produced between December 1997 and May 2001, the Bassara manufactured between May 1999 and April 2001 and the Expert made between November 1998 and December 2002, Kyodo reported.

Subject to the recall for the first time by the company are Teana cars produced between January and May last year due to defects in the fuel tank which could cause fuel to leak when the tank is filled, it said.
