Home Is Where The Car is: 61% of Americans Plan to Stay at
Home this Thanksgiving
THE AIG AUTO INSURANCE THANKSGIVING SURVEY REVEALS THAT MORE THAN HALF OF
AMERICAN ADULTS WILL AVOID THANKSGIVING TRAVEL;
31 PERCENT WILL DRIVE, WHILE ONLY 3 PERCENT WILL TRAVEL BY PLANE OR TRAIN
While Thanksgiving is traditionally a well-traveled holiday, AIG Auto
Insurance’s Thanksgiving survey reports that the majority (61 percent) of
Americans will stay home this Thanksgiving. Thirty-one percent of
Americans will hit the road and three percent plan to fly or take a train
to their Thanksgiving destination. Regardless of Americans’ travel plans,
it’s clear that Thanksgiving is about spending time with friends and
family.
AIG Auto Insurance polled 1,051 Americans to see how Thanksgiving differs
among families – from how they get to dinner, to the type of meal
preferred, and the make-up of the family table.
Questions included:
Will you travel this Thanksgiving and, if so, by what means?
What’s your strategy to avoid Thanksgiving traffic?
Which phrase do you think will be heard most on the way to
Thanksgiving dinners this year?
Who would you choose to cook your Thanksgiving dinner?
What’s the first thing you do after Thanksgiving dinner?
What TV family most closely resembles your family at the Thanksgiving
table?
Findings indicate that:
Sixty-one percent of American adults will not travel this
Thanksgiving.
The majority of Americans (59 percent) consider staying at home the
best way to avoid holiday traffic.
Almost three-fifths of Americans (57 percent) expect “Are we there
yet??? to be the phrase most likely to be heard in vehicles across the
country during Thanksgiving.
Fifty-seven percent of Americans surveyed choose their mom’s home
cooking over a celebrity chef’s Thanksgiving feast. Those opting for
a gourmet meal picked Emeril Lagasse (20 percent), then Martha
Stewart (11 percent), followed by Rachel Ray (9 percent) and then
Mario Batali (3 percent).
Nearly half of those surveyed (46 percent) plan to tidy up first
thing after their meal is finished. More women than men plan to clean
(60 percent vs. 33 percent). Conversely, more men than women plan to
watch TV right after turkey (42 percent vs. 18 percent). Eleven
percent will simply unbutton their pants and 10 percent will take a
nap.
Thirty-six percent of Americans feel that their family most resembles
the Cleavers. Twenty-six percent think their dinner table is most
like the cast of Friends, while 23 percent compare their families to
The Simpsons. Eight percent of those polled also likened their family
feasts to those of the Sopranos and the Addams Family.
AIG Auto Insurance commissioned Russell Research of New York, NY to conduct
an online survey October 28 through October 31, 2005. They polled 1,051
American adults, 18 years old and older.
The sample was weighted to provide a national representative and
projectable estimate of the adult population. Sampling error for a survey
of this size is +/- 3.1 percent at the 95 percent level of confidence.
