AAA Texas: Weekend Gas Watch; Pump Prices Drop Slightly
HOUSTON--May 5, 2006--After eight consecutive weeks of increases, gas price averages in all Texas cities surveyed dropped slightly this week, according to AAA Texas' Weekend Gas Watch.In Texas, the current average is $2.862 a gallon -- a weekly decrease of three cents. Dallas has the highest average at $2.941 -- down nearly two cents. Corpus Christi motorists saw the biggest decrease of seven cents a gallon to an average of $2.750.
"The recent run-up in gas prices were primarily due to the high cost of crude (more than $70 a barrel) and the concern over gas supplies as refineries made the switch from MTBE blend to the new ethanol blended gasoline," said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "Those concerns appear to have weakened, and motorists should see more decreases at the pumps in the coming days. However, we still have to see whether these decreases are part of a longer-term trend."
The national average for regular self-serve gasoline is $2.918 a gallon -- less than a penny lower than last week.
