  • Hello Bob,

Nice article! I have many of the same concerns. If one only looks at the safety, environmental and ergonomic aspects of the American auto industry, one would only walk away shaking their heads.

Why the industry keep making these monstrosities and the public keeps buying them is a mystery to me.

Yes, I like the power of a corvette, the luxury of a large American car or SUV, but do we need it? NO! Can the environment and economy afford them - NO!

I have had many performance sports cars and have enjoyed them all, but with the current world political situation, the potential gas concerns, the potential environmental issues and my personal concerns for the ability for most American drivers to be qualified to drive many of these high performance monster vehicles, I have rethought my priorities.

In 2002 I purchased a Prius Hybrid, and it was the best automotive purchase I have ever done. It was economical, quiet, comfortable, dependable and let me realize that performance could be measured in different ways than just G forces and quarter mile times. I loved to see it get as much 56 MPG on a tank and my average over the year was in excess of 45 MPG all the time.

I recently graduated to a Camry Hybrid, and that appears to be almost as good and my initial move to the Prius. It is larger, more comfortable but more appropriate for my needs at this time.

Why more Americans don't buy smaller, safer and more environmentally friendly vehicles is still a mystery to me, but I am very happy with my decision.

Maybe if the American manufactures made more competitive vehicles, the consumers would buy them! Before long they won't have a choice but to buy foreign because the US industry may have to close their doors.

I am not a true tree hugger yet.... but it does seem to be more attractive all the time!

As gas prices approach $4.00 I just smile at my meager 37 MPG on a tank and and enjoy the nice green trees!
