DETROIT - March 27, 2008: What makes a car a collector’s item is more than just its looks, according to General Motors (GM). Company officials indicate car collecting is generally based on a number of variables including performance, rarity, style and popularity. Other ways to ensure a car becomes a collectible, experts say, is to include a serial number, produce a limited edition or building special models with higher performance factors.

GM indicates this year the Corvette brand is taking steps to ensure 500 of its Corvette Z06 vehicles become collectors' items. During the 2008 Memorial Day Indianapolis 500 race, two-time Indy 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi will pace the race in a customized Corvette Z06. Fittipaldi will also sign 500 special edition pace car replicas – enhancing the vehicle’s potential to become a collector’s item.
