LoJack Launches Stolen Vehicle Recovery System in Greater Reno Area

Residents Now Have a Powerful Vehicle Theft Protection Solution

RENO, Nev., April 27 -- At a press event here today, LoJack Corporation , the premier worldwide provider of tracking and recovery systems, announced that its Stolen Vehicle Recovery System, a time-tested Radio Frequency-based theft protection solution, is available to consumers in the greater Reno area. More than 1,400* vehicles were stolen in the Reno Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in 2008. Owners of cars, trucks, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and construction equipment now have a proven solution that is directly integrated into area law enforcement agencies that leverage the system to track and recover LoJack-equipped vehicles when they are reported stolen. To date, LoJack has a 90% recovery success rate and has recovered more than 250,000 stolen assets worldwide.

Effective immediately, the LoJack System will enable local and regional law enforcement agencies, including the Reno Police Department, Nevada Highway Patrol, Sparks Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff's Office, Carson City Sheriff's Office, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, Nevada County Sheriff's Office, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, South Lake Tahoe California Highway Patrol, Truckee Police Department and the Truckee California Highway Patrol to provide a new level of vehicle theft protection to residents. To the participating agencies, LoJack has donated Police Tracking Computers (PTCs) and installed the units in the law enforcement vehicles that police use to track and recover stolen vehicles.

How LoJack Works

At the time of purchase, a small wireless radio-frequency transceiver is hidden in a vehicle in one of 20 possible locations. Once the vehicle is reported stolen to the police, the vehicle's identification number is matched to the LoJack System registration number by state law enforcement computers. After the match, the LoJack System is activated by police, which causes the small, hidden radio transceiver in the vehicle to emit a silent, continuous signal. Law enforcement vehicles and aircraft equipped with LoJack PTCs follow these signals, which lead to the precise location of the stolen vehicle. The 90 percent recovery rate for vehicles equipped with LoJack has translated over the years into $5 billion in recovered assets worldwide.
