Central Parking and Zipcar Announce Agreement

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--Central Parking System, Inc. (“Central Parking”), the nation’s largest parking management company and Zipcar, Inc., the world’s largest car-sharing service, announced an agreement for designated parking spots for Zipcar vehicles in New York City and the surrounding New Jersey markets. Central Parking has teamed with Zipcar at over 100 locations in the New York metropolitan area. Under this preferred program, there is an opportunity for expansion of more than 1,000 Zipcar vehicles in Central Parking locations throughout the New York City and New Jersey markets.

Central Parking and Zipcar also will work together to market the preferred program to office buildings, universities, hospitals, residential buildings and developers to promote the convenience and environmental benefits of car sharing. The two companies plan to complete similar agreements in other cities later this year.

Emanuel J. Eads, Central Parking’s President and Chief Executive Officer, said, “We are thrilled to expand our relationship with Zipcar in the New York and New Jersey markets. This partnership between our companies will give the customers and clients of both companies greater access to car-sharing services. This program also underscores Central Parking’s strategic focus on specific green initiatives in the parking industry. With Central Parking’s recently announced deployment of our more customer-friendly New York website (www.centralparking.com), access to Zipcar locations can be quickly and easily determined.”

Zipcar’s service has had a significant, positive impact on the environment and local communities. According to a Zipcar member survey, drivers who use Zipcar as an alternative to owning a car ultimately spend less time behind the wheel and, in many cases, have surrendered ownership of their vehicles or have halted their purchasing decision. This results in less congestion on the roadways and fewer greenhouse gas emissions and particulates. Older cars are replaced with new Zipcars that have more stringent pollution controls, preserving green space because fewer parking spaces are required to meet the needs of the same number of people.

“Central Parking has a strong market presence with key locations in the Metropolitan New York City area and consistent standard of excellence that we look for from all of our parking partners,” added Mark Norman, President and Chief Operating Officer of Zipcar. “Having Zipcars in multiple garages and parking locations helps us to underscore the environmental benefits of car sharing with those that utilize Central Parking’s facilities and fulfill our members’ most important need – extremely convenient access to car-sharing vehicles.”
