     Shopping car repairs? A good part of our day is spent estimating the cost of repairs from folks looking for service. Some of these callers are trying to get a handle on the the value of the repair. Others are looking for a deal. We don't have any issue in answering caller questions, however; there are several issues with shopping repairs buy phone.
     Other than regular maintenance, how can you expect the tech on the phone to estimate repairs? If you are shopping then obliviously you are not happy with the first quote you received or you want to change shops. The shop on the phone is at a distinct disadvantage. The tech on the phone doesn't know you or your car. What is the vehicles service history? How old is the car? What is it's current condition? Do you want first line parts or will second line? The questions are numerous. Here's the point. Build a relationship with a good shop and stick with them. Nothing wrong with comparison shopping, however, by servicing your car regularly, both you and your mechanic know your car. Surprise repairs are limited. The whole ownership experience becomes a whole lot easier.
     If you are looking to change shops visit the “new” shop. Interview them. Bring your list and your car. Talk to other customers in the waiting area. Look at the quality of the work that the shop does. With the advances in technology the numbers of shops available to do general repairs are shrinking. The cost of keeping up with new technology is overwhelming. Try and find a family Doctor. Same idea. By the way, J D Power just published their annual customer satisfaction index. The results? Independents lead the field in the service experience. People are more satisfied dealing with owner operators then they are with any other automotive service offered. Why? Smaller shops offer personal service. Trailing the field? The mass market big box and tire stores.
