FRANKLIN, TN, March 4, 2011: Today, Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) announced its planned participation in the Vehicle-CRS Fit Program, a future initiative proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that is aimed at helping consumers choose child restraint systems that properly fit their vehicles. While details around the voluntary NHTSA program are not finalized, the issue of child restraint safety is already a priority at Nissan, which has led the industry through its Snug Kids' program.

To address the need for increased compatibility between vehicles and child restraint systems, NHTSA recently announced that it would establish a new consumer information program to disseminate a list of child restraints that vehicle manufacturers suggest fit properly in their individual vehicles on Safercar.gov. Nissan's Snug Kids, an industry-first program established in 2002, currently publishes similar information on the Nissan and Infiniti websites.

"Nissan is committed to passenger safety, including the safety of children, our most precious cargo," said Bob Yakushi, director of product safety, Nissan North America.  "We began Snug Kids to aid caretakers in the purchase and installation of child restraint systems, and fully support NHTSA's direction."

Nissan introduced Snug Kids after learning that some customers were having difficulty determining which child safety seat fits properly in their vehicles. Nissan safety engineers certified as Child Passenger Safety Technicians have spent thousands of hours evaluating hundreds of child restraints by installing them in all the rear seats of current Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. The result is the Snug Kids' Child Safety Seat Fit Guide, which helps parents confidently select a child restraint that fits their vehicle while also providing valuable tips on the proper fit of a child restraint.

More information about Snug Kids is available at Nissan Snug Kids and Infiniti Snug Kids
