Leddar d-tec Successfully Detects Vehicles and Bicycles in Davis, California in adverse conditions

Quebec City (QC)--March 8, 2011: LeddarTech Inc., a technology company specialized in advanced 3D detection for traffic management systems, announced today that the City of Davis, located in California, USA, has selected its flagship product - LeddarTM d-tec - for the detection of vehicles and bicycles.

In many traffic intersections, the ability to reliably and automatically detect vehicles and bicycles is a requirement, but difficult to achieve...until recently.

Davis, California, a city of 64,000 residents and home to a University of California campus that has a student body of 30,000 (many of whom commute via bicycles), was facing this challenge. From a practical perspective, there are so many bicycle commuters in Davis that it makes good sense to detect and accommodate them at signalized intersections.

Additionally, the State of California recently adopted legislation[1] that requires new signalized intersections and certain existing signalized intersections to incorporate technology that can automatically and reliably detect bicycles.

City of Davis officials are very responsive and proactive in finding solutions to such challenges. The City and LeddarTech Inc. have addressed this challenge at the intersection of Covell Blvd. and Sycamore Lane by installing four Leddar(tm) d-tec units to provide accurate detection of bicycles and vehicles. Leddar(tm) is a new 3D detection technology that utilizes LEDs as the detection engine. According to Mr. Emile (Butch) Breault, City Electrician, "The result is automatic detection of bicycles, motorized vehicles, and pedestrians in any kind of weather or lighting conditions". For example, the City experiences certain periods of heavy fog when other vehicle detection technologies simply do not work well. In Davis, 3D LeddarTM d-tec detection technology recently proved to work perfectly in dense fog, high wind and heavy rains. As mentioned by Mr. Breault, "The intersection with LeddarTM d-tec worked without any issues, contrary to other intersections with different detection technology".
