DETROIT - March 17, 2011: Prices at the pump are on the rise. And although today's cars are engineered with more efficient, fuel-saving technologies there are still steps you can take to squeeze more miles out of a gallon. Industry experts say there are ways drivers can improve their own fuel economy by making some very minor changes. To start, a properly tuned engine can increase fuel efficiency by about 4 percent and fixing a serious issue like a faulty oxygen sensor can boost mileage up to 40 percent. You can also save by slowing down. Gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph, making every 5 mph over 60 mph like adding an additional 24 cents per gallon for gas.
