CAMBRIDGE, MA--March 18, 2011: Yesterday, as part of his trade mission to the UK, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick met with Brett Akker, Vice President of European Development for Zipcar, Inc., to discuss the Massachusetts-based company's recent expansion in the United Kingdom.

Governor Patrick's trade mission to the UK focused on business expansion, job growth and collaboration, and aimed to stimulate new investment and partnerships between businesses and organizations in Massachusetts and the UK.

"Zipcar is a prime example of a Commonwealth-based company which has established increased operations in the UK, while continuing to demonstrate significant new job creation and economic growth right here in Massachusetts," said Governor Patrick.

Over the past two years from 2008 to 2010, Zipcar, the world's leading car sharing network, expanded employment at the company's home office in Cambridge, MA and regional office in Boston by 53 percent.  In April 2010, Zipcar announced the acquisition of Streetcar, the largest car sharing company in the UK.

"The integration of Zipcar and Streetcar brings the two companies together to create a single, global brand, and acts as a foundation for expanding the economic and environmental benefits of car sharing through a large scale network across Europe, while continuing to grow in the US," said Akker.
