Electric Vehicles Summit to Power Industry towards Obama Target

LOS ANGELES--April 7, 2011: Barack Obama wants one million Electric Vehicles on the road by 2015, and after decades of spluttering starts and stalled hopes, the Electric Vehicles market is sparking global interest ahead of entering the mainstream.

“"As we make our cars and trucks more efficient, we've got to harness new technologies to fuel our vehicles with everything from biofuels to natural gas to advanced batteries”

Obama used a major speech at Georgetown University last week to urge the automotive industry to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels by replacing gas-guzzling vehicles with more fuel-efficient models.

"As we make our cars and trucks more efficient, we've got to harness new technologies to fuel our vehicles with everything from biofuels to natural gas to advanced batteries," he said.

"Companies like UPS, FedEx, AT&T, Verizon, and PepsiCo, firms with some of the largest fleets in the country are switching to more efficient vehicles. And through our Clean Fleets Partnership, driven not by government, but by business, more companies are going to be switching to electric and alternative vehicles, too; not out of the goodness of their hearts, but because it's good for their bottom lines," he said.

While it is clear that electric vehicles provide economic, political and environmental benefits, in order to make then commercially viable (and meet Obama's 2015 target), there needs to be collaboration inside and outside the industry.
