Federal-Mogul Earns Two 2011 Automotive News PACE Awards

2011 Pace Awards

SOUTHFIELD, MI--April 12, 2011: Federal-Mogul Corporation was the recipient of two 2011 Automotive News PACE Awards at a ceremony on April 11 in Detroit. The prestigious award recognizes automotive suppliers for superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance.

Federal-Mogul's EcoTough®-coated piston and LKZ® oil control ring were recognized in the Product category, which highlights innovations in new products, components or systems that have significant market impact and act as "game changers" in the automotive industry. The company's IROX polymer bearing overlay and K16 bonded Unipiston® were selected as PACE finalists.

"Providing customers with global leading technology and innovation that improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and enhance vehicle safety is the foundation of our strategy to generate sustainable global profitable growth," said Federal-Mogul President and CEO Jose Maria Alapont. "We're extremely honored to receive these two PACE Awards, which underscore our commitment and success in providing our automotive customers with world-class, industry-leading products and services."

Overview of the Recognized Federal-Mogul Technologies

Federal-Mogul's LKZ® oil control ring is an innovative two-piece oil ring for direct-injection gasoline engines, previously developed for demanding diesel applications. The patented LKZ oil control ring reduces oil consumption by up to 50 percent and friction by up to 15 percent, compared to the best conventional two-piece oil rings.  Additional benefits include improved fuel economy, emission reduction and longer oil life.

Federal-Mogul's EcoTough®-coated piston for gasoline engines combines the properties of low wear and low friction in a single application. The EcoTough-coated piston offers superior wear resistance and reduces fuel consumption up to 0.8 percent, as well as reduced CO2 emissions, compared to conventional piston coatings.

The company's IROX polymer overlay is an innovative polymer coated bearing shell that reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by withstanding mechanical loads produced by heavily boosted engines.  IROX also addresses the lubrication challenges associated with frequent engine re-starts found in hybrid and other stop-start engines and can help increase the life of crankshafts and bearing shells by more than five times in more extreme duty applications.

Federal-Mogul's K16 bonded Unipiston® is a single-piece bonded hydraulic clutch piston for automatic transmissions that utilizes the company's K16 elastomer compound to eliminate the energy-intensive oven curing stage traditionally used to develop the piston seal. Through an innovative combination of polymer chemistries and press cure conditions, Federal-Mogul's use of the K16 elastomeric compound enables the company to reduce the environmental footprint of its sealing operations with a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and natural gas consumption. K16 also exceeds the performance of previous seals in terms of wear resistance and life expectancy.
