FLINT, MI, June 24, 2011: The General Motors Foundation today awarded grants totaling $75,000 to support programs at 15 Flint-area nonprofits and organizations serving children, adults and seniors.

The grants were distributed a day after General Motors hosted more than 10,000 visitors at a special "thank you" open house at the company's five Flint-area manufacturing sites.

"Every day, the men and women of General Motors do more than design, build and sell cars, trucks and crossovers," said GM Foundation President Vivian Pickard. "They also devote time, resources and money to help their neighbors. The GM Foundation wants to supplement their efforts by funding some very important programs in the Flint area."

The GM Foundation distributed 15, $5,000 grants to the following organizations:

  • Food Bank of Eastern Michigan
  • Flint River Watershed Coalition
  • Friends of the Alfred Sloan Museum
  • Crim Fitness Foundation
  • Tall Pine Council, Boy Scouts of America
  • Resource Genesee
  • One Stop Housing Resource Center
  • Urban League of Flint
  • Hispanic Technology Community Center
  • Valley Area Agency on Aging
  • Big Brothers and Big Sisters
  • Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint
  • Motherly Intercession
  • My Brother's Keeper
  • Girl Scouts of Southeast Michigan

The grants will support specific programs at each organization with the goal of helping children, adults and seniors affected by poverty or unemployment get access to food, clothing, shelter and other resources. Some programs also help educate people and promote healthy activities in the Flint area.

This year's grants match the $75,000 contribution the GM Foundation made a year ago in the Flint area. The foundation is donating $1 million this year to nonprofit groups in GM plant communities throughout the country.

"We hope that by providing funding to these important organizations, others will be inspired to offer their support as well," Pickard said.
