SEATTLE--July 19, 2011: Zipcar, Inc., the world's leading car sharing network, today announced its expansion into Redmond, Washington, as part of its program with Equity Residential. Zipcar will place two vehicles at Equity's Red160 apartments in downtown Redmond, providing area residents with increased access to affordable, convenient transportation options that are proven to reduce congestion and emissions.

"Car sharing is a great way to support those choosing to walk, bike or take the bus around town and encourage a more sustainable community," stated Redmond Mayor John Marchione.  "We are pleased to welcome Zipcar to Redmond, and look forward to seeing the market for such innovative services grow."

"Downtown Redmond is an extremely attractive market for car sharing --it currently has one of the strongest commuter programs in the nation, is known as the 'bicycle capital of the Northwest' and will serve to complement our successful car sharing programs in Seattle and nearby Bellevue," said Carla Archambault, General Manager, Zipcar Seattle.  "We are thrilled to introduce car sharing to the local community by placing cars at Red160, and hope to grow the program over time to offer vehicles in additional spots downtown."

As part of the launch of car sharing in Redmond, Zipcar will be hosting a kickoff event on July 20 at Red160 from 6:00 -- 8:00 p.m.  The event is open to all residents of Red160, as well as members of the local community, and will feature live music, food and beverages as well as special offers for new members who sign up for Zipcar.

Zipcar provides a viable alternative to car ownership, making it an important component of a sustainable transportation network in Redmond.  Studies show that every Zipcar takes at least 15 personally-owned vehicles off the road, helping to reduce congestion and CO2 emissions.  A recent Zipcar survey revealed that Zipcar members reported a 47 percent increase in the use of public transit after becoming members, 10 percent increase in cycling and 26 percent increase in walking.

Zipcar launched its partnership with Equity Residential in May 2011, and currently offers Zipcars at Equity Residential apartment communities in the New York, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Seattle markets.

Gas, reserved parking spots, insurance, roadside assistance and up to 180 miles of driving per day are included in the hourly and daily Zipcar rates. Cars can be reserved for as short as an hour or for up to multiple days.
