Optotraffic Successful in Reducing Speeding in Cheverly, MD

LANHAM, MD--August 26, 2011: Optotraffic successfully accomplished its mission to support the Town of Cheverly in its efforts to reduce speeding on streets near schools. After a year of operations, Cheverly saw a reduction in citations from over 400 in the first month (July 2010) to an average of less than 1 per day in the last month (August 2011).

Cheverly's Council and Mayor authorized the use of automated speed monitoring systems within school zones in 2009 "to reduce speeding on streets near schools in an effort to prevent accidents, injuries, and fatalities among pedestrians and motorists" (ORDINANCE O-3-09 Code of the Town of Cheverly). The September 2011 issue of the Cheverly's newsletter declared: "Chief [of Police] and Public Works Director feel that the speed camera has been effective in slowing traffic all over the town."
