SCHAUMBURG, IL--October 11, 2011: Motorola Solutions, Inc. won a contract from the Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) to move transit voice operations to the Colorado Statewide Digital Trunked Radio System (DTRS). This is the first major transit agency moving to a statewide Project 25 (P25) system in the country. This contract replaces analog UHF technology with 7/800MHz ASTRO® 25 digital P25-standard infrastructure and prepares Denver RTD for the VHF/UHF Narrowbanding mandate with the new ASTRO 25 digital P25 infrastructure and technology.

“Communications for the transit industry are critical to the safety of passengers and the efficiency of public transportation. Through the deployment of advanced digital technology and Motorola Solution's commitment to offering customers a P25 standards-based solution, the Denver RTD will be connected with the statewide system for increased interoperability.”

From the Motorola MetroCom Bus Transit Communications System introduced in 1974, to today's evolving communications equipment, Motorola provides state and metropolitan public transportation agencies with solutions that help transportation systems run safer and more efficiently.

KEY FACTS

  • Motorola will provide more than 2,300 mobile and portable radios for Denver RTD's fleet of vehicles. Motorola was chosen from the four other competing vendors that have radios certified to work with the statewide system.
  • The new mobile radios will be integrated with the in-vehicle transit control head providing expanded voice coverage and enhancing the security of drivers and passengers in Denver RTD's service area, which serves nearly 2.8 million people.
  • By joining the DTRS ASTRO 25 system, Denver RTD employees will now have direct interoperability with all other law enforcement and public safety agencies on the Colorado statewide system through standards-based P25 technology.
  • By using the statewide DTRS, Denver RTD will have the flexibility to leverage the DTRS extensive coverage as future routes expand.
  • In addition, the infrastructure expansion contract will add more capacity to the existing network, helping to reduce voice channel congestion and enable 700MHz and 800MHz mixed talkgroup operations in the metro area.
  • All existing state and local users on the DTRS will benefit from these enhancements with further interoperability and clear voice communications.
