FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA--Nov. 7, 2011: The Fountain Valley School District and Hyundai Motor America today announced the opening of a new ST Math lab at Urbain H. Plavan Elementary School in Fountain Valley. The new Hyundai ST Math Lab will be officially opened at a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 7 at 10:30 a.m. at Urbain H. Plavan Elementary School, where students and faculty will be joined by Superintendent Marc Ecker and Board President Judith Edwards, city officials and representatives from Hyundai Motor America, for a celebratory assembly that will include faculty, student and guest speakers and a tour of the lab and walkthrough of the ST Math program.

ST (Spatial Temporal) Math, developed by the MIND Research Institute, is designed to increase student interest and success in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) -based curriculum in public schools. This highly motivational, integrated teaching and learning tool will enable teachers to reinforce instruction in the classroom with fun practice activities and tutorial interventions.

"Supporting the efforts of local communities and educational programs is at the forefront of Hyundai's commitment to its corporate social responsibility programs," said Zafar Brooks, Director, Government Relations and Diversity Outreach, Hyundai Motor America. "We are excited to partner with our local school district to provide teachers the resources they need to better engage and prepare students for the future."

With Hyundai's gift, all students at Urbain H. Plavan will now be able to access the Web-based ST Math program used at four other schools in the district and over 1,000 schools across the country. Each student will visit the lab for two 45-minute sessions per week, where they will interact with JiJi, an instructional penguin that walks them through the increasingly difficult math concepts in the district's K-8 curriculum.

"Funding for our public schools continues to drop to levels not seen since 2005 and resources to support our California public schools are now lower than almost any state in the union," said Marc Ecker, Superintendent, Fountain Valley School District. "Business partners are needed now more than ever and we thank Hyundai Motor America for their support of public education and the Fountain Valley School District."
