National Safety Council Calls on Americans to Bring Safety to the Forefront This June

ITASCA, IL--May 29, 2012: Each June, the National Safety Council encourages organizations and communities to participate in National Safety Month -- an annual observance to educate and encourage safe behaviors around leading causes of preventable injuries and deaths. This year's observance highlights the need to practice safe behaviors 24/7, as three times as many employees are injured off the job than while at work. Free materials including posters, facts sheets and quizzes are available at nsc.org/nsm to help spread these important safety messages.

“Our more than 20,000 Grainger team members globally are absolutely committed to helping businesses keep their employees safe and productive.”

Each week in June carries a safety theme that reflects high rates of injuries, which include:

  • Employee Wellness -- June 3 to 9
  • Ergonomics -- June 10 to 16
  • Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls -- June 17 to 23
  • Driving Safety -- June 24 to 30

Throughout National Safety Month, the Council also will be promoting the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award Plus challenge designed to motivate participants to make physical activity and healthy eating a part of their everyday life -- critical elements to overall wellness.

"As North America's largest safety products distributor, Grainger is proud to support the National Safety Council and sponsor National Safety Month," said Court Carruthers, president, Grainger US. "Our more than 20,000 Grainger team members globally are absolutely committed to helping businesses keep their employees safe and productive."

Unintentional injuries and deaths in the United States remain at unacceptable levels, demonstrating the need for a national observance such as National Safety Month. Unintentional deaths reached an estimated 126,100 in 2010, compared with an estimate of 122,700 in the previous year. The cost of unintentional injuries to Americans and their employers exceeds $730 billion nationally, or $6,200 per household, and causes great suffering for individuals and their families.

"Safety is paramount to us at Proto Industrial Tools," said Joe McCormack, president, Stanley Black & Decker Industrial Distribution. "We see it as part of our mission to provide high quality, durable products that make a workplace safer, along with training programs that enable our users to select the right tool for the job, minimizing incidents and downtime. We are proud to partner with the National Safety Council for National Safety Month."

National Safety Council members have access to more materials and free safety webinars during June, which delve deeper into safety issues that affect the workplace.

NSC thanks all of the National Safety Month sponsors, including Grainger, Proto Industrial Tools and Toyota and for their commitment to safety.
