To create the Used Car Rankings, U.S. News calculated scores for each vehicle by combining the consensus opinion of automotive critics with safety, reliability and operating cost data. The operating cost data is the projected five-year operating expense of a vehicle, including the cost of fuel, maintenance and repairs. U.S. News weighted these data points based on proprietary surveys of used car shoppers to determine what matters most to them.

"In addition to the rankings, our reviews provide a balanced summary of each used car so consumers can make an informed purchase decision. Over time, we'll expand the Used Car Rankings to include additional vehicles and model years," said Jamie Page Deaton, Managing Editor, Autos for U.S. News & World Report.

The Best Cars website was launched by U.S. News & World Report in 2007 to serve as a free, objective resource for car shoppers. More than 24 million people have visited U.S. News Best Cars in the past year alone.
