March 4, 2014: An 11-year-old girl beat more than 800 of her peers to win £1,000 worth of computer equipment for her school, a Samsung Galaxy and £100 prize money, all thanks to Border Cars Group Mitsubishi.

Laura Rowney, a pupil at Kirkmichael Primary School, was asked to come up with a colourful and creative design, which had a low carbon energy theme, to decorate a Mitsubishi Mirage, which has CO2 emission levels across the range lower than 100g/km.

The winning design will be transferred to the dealership’s three courtesy cars and driven by customers for next 12 months.

The competition, hosted by Border Cars in partnership with Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, had been running for six months and more than 20 schools signed up for the scheme.

All the pupils who took part were invited to a grand finale at the company’s Mitsubishi dealership in Ayr. Each entry was displayed on the wall and there were burgers, hotdogs, a sweet stand and refreshments available.

West FM’s Fiona Shields presented the evening, while 2011’s Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowall sang to the waiting crowd of guests, teachers, families and children.

Laura said: “I was really surprised and had no idea that I had won. I can't wait to see the car again and I'm excited for my friends to see it too.”

Callum Watson, Dealer Principal at Border Cars, said: “The evening was all about celebrating the pupils who put so much effort into their designs.

“We’d like to thank them all for taking part, our panel of judges and, of course, all our staff who put in so much effort into making the whole competition a success.”
