BRENTWOOD, Essex--April 4, 2014 – Chalking up its highest monthly sales volume since 2008, UK market leader Ford recorded year-over-year increases in its car and commercial vehicle (CV) sales for March and for the year to date. Ford’s lead over its nearest rival in car and total vehicle sales has also been extended both for the month and for the year to date.

According to the official sales figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT):

Mark Ovenden, Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, said: "March sales are boosted by the number plate change, and the month has seen Ford’s car and CV ranges continue their terrific 2014 sales performance with Ford registrations at their highest since 2008.

“These sales are founded on growth in the more profitable retail and net fleet sectors of the market and they are the result of our continued investment in exciting products and industry-leading technologies, delivered through the strongest dealer network in the UK. Models launched this year - new Transit, new Focus and new Mondeo - will strengthen further the heartland of Ford’s best-ever product range."

The official figures released by the SMMT today show that total car sales in March were up 17.7 per cent to 464,824 units, compared with March 2013. Ford car sales of 63,149 were up from 54,702 in March 2013. For the year to date (end March) total UK car sales were 688,122, up 13.7 per cent compared with 2013, while Ford car sales for this period were 94,876, up from 84,347 in 2013.

With a total of 25,753 registrations the Ford Fiesta was the UK best seller in March – 9,522 sales and 2.0 percentage points of market share ahead of its nearest non-Ford rival - and for the year to date, with sales up from 34,309 to 39,240, compared with the same period in 2013.

There have been significant increases in Ford’s retail and net fleet car sales for March and the year to date, compared with the same periods in 2013. March retail and net fleet sales were up from 28,214 and 12,516 to 31,105 and 14,817, respectively, and for the year to date retail sales were up from 41,244 to 45,596 and net fleet sales were up from 21,932 to 26,404.

UK CV sales in March were 54,743, up 10.9 per cent, compared with March 2013. Total sales of Ford CVs in March were up from 11,649 to 11,797, compared with the same month last year.

Ford medium commercial sales, headed by the industry-leading Ford Transit and Ford Transit Custom, were 10,019 in March, and for the year to date sales were up from 15,789 to 16,958. Ford Fiesta Van, Ford Transit Custom and Ford Transit were all leaders in their respective segments in March and for the year to date.
