The Ford Fiesta remains the UKs best selling car for April

BRENTWOOD, Essex--May 7, 2014: – UK market leader Ford recorded year-over-year increases in its total vehicle sales and share in April and extended its sales lead over its nearest rival to more than 11,000 units.

According to the official April sales figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT):

Mark Ovenden, Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, said: "UK car sales are demonstrating a sustained, strong level of growth and, in this context, it is gratifying that Ford is maintaining its robust sales momentum through 2014, underlined by increased sales and share and beating overall market growth.

“Ford has its best-ever range of vehicles and it is extending its market footprint through a continued investment in exciting products, such as the Ford Transit, including the Tourneo range, and industry-leading technologies spearheaded by the multi-award-winning EcoBoost engine, which are delivered through the strongest dealer network in the UK."

The official figures released by the SMMT today show that total car sales in April were up 8.2 per cent to 176,820 units, compared with April 2013. Ford’s April car sales of 25,843 were up 16.5 per cent. For the year to date (end April) total UK car sales were 864,942, up 12.5 per cent compared with 2013, while Ford car sales for this period were 120,719, up 13.3 per cent.

With a total of 10,250 registrations, up 26.8 per cent compared with April 2013, the Ford Fiesta was the UK best seller – 4,948 sales and 2.8 percentage points of market share ahead of its nearest non-Ford rival. For the year to date, Fiesta sales are up 16.7 per cent at 49,490, compared with the same period in 2013.

Increases in Ford’s retail and net fleet car sales for the year to date, compared with 2013, demonstrate the underlying commercial strength of Ford’s UK business. Retail and Net fleet sales were up from 51,880 and 28,298 to 56,603 and 34,112, respectively.

UK commercial vehicle (CV) sales for the year to date were 112,841, up 7.2 per cent, compared with the same period in 2013. Total sales of Ford CVs for the year to date were up from 24,659 to 24,989, compared with 2013.

Ford medium commercial sales, headed by the industry-leading Ford Transit and Ford Transit Custom, were 21,287 for the year to date up from 20,802. Ford Fiesta Van, Ford Transit Custom and Ford Transit were all leaders in their respective segments in April and for the year to date.
