The Ford Fiesta Remains the Best Selling Car in the UK

BRENTWOOD, ESSEX, UK -- July 4, 2014: UK market leader Ford has increased its car, commercial vehicle and total vehicle sales for the year to the end of June, extending its lead over its nearest rival to over 54,000.

According to the official sales figures for the first half of 2014 from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT):

Ford stretches its sales lead in all segments: cars, commercials and total vehicle Ford Fiesta and Focus are the number one and two best-selling cars Ford Transit and Transit Custom are number one and two best-selling CVs In combination, Transit is Britain’s fifth best-selling nameplate, ahead of many top-selling cars Ford Fiesta sales lead increased over its nearest non-Ford rival by 65 per cent Ford Fiesta leads retail sales with volume more than twice its nearest rival Mark Ovenden, Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, said: "Ford has extended its sales lead through the first half of 2014 thanks to the support of its dealer partners, who make up the strongest dealer network in the UK, and the company’s commitment to new models and technologies.

“This investment is today extending Ford’s market footprint in the important CV segment with the Ford Transit family, and will fuel future premium model introductions such as the Ford Edge, the Ford Mustang and the Vignale ranges. Evidence of Ford’s industry-leading technologies is seen in sporty new Ford Fiesta editions that use a 140PS version of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the winner of the International Engine of the Year trophy for an unprecedented third consecutive year.”

The official figures released by the SMMT today show that total car sales in June were up 6.2 per cent at 228,291, compared with June 2013. Ford’s June car sales were 29,376. For the first half of 2014 total UK car sales were 1,287,265, up 10.6 per cent compared with 2013, while Ford car sales for this period were 173,554, up from 163,396.

With total registrations exceeding 70,000 for the first half of 2014, up 11.3 per cent compared with the same period in 2013, the Ford Fiesta was the UK best seller – nearly 28,000 sales and a full 2.2 percentage points of market share ahead of its nearest non-Ford rival. Ford Fiesta also heads UK retail car sales, 3.8 percentage points of sector share ahead of its nearest rival and more than double the volume of retail registrations.

Increases in the commercially-important retail and ‘net fleet’ car sales sectors for the first half of 2014, compared with the same period in 2013, demonstrate the solidity of Ford’s UK business. Retail and net fleet car sales for Ford were up from 75,788 and 45,229 to 80,933 and 51,583, respectively.

UK commercial vehicle (CV) sales for the first half of 2014 were 175,264, up 11.0 per cent, compared with the same period in 2013. Total sales of Ford CVs for the first half of 2014 were up from 36,478 to 39,086, compared with 2013.

Ford medium commercial sales, headed by the industry-leading Ford Transit and Ford Transit Custom, reached 32,411 for the first half of 2014 up from 30,934. Ford light commercial sales for the same period are up from 5,544 to 6,675 and are now benefitting from the recent launches of the Ford Transit Connect and the Ford Transit Courier that are part of the extended Ford Transit family and, in this sector, join the segment-leading Ford Fiesta Van.
