INDYLIGHTS: Parker Johnstone Teams With Dorricott Racing

SONOMA, Calif. - Former CART FedEx Championship Series driver Parker Johnstone has been named Driver Development Consultant for PPG Dayton Indy Lights Championship contender Dorricott Racing for the remainder of the 1998 season. The announcement was made today by Dorricott Racing team owner Bob Dorricott.

Johnstone, a four-year CART veteran who is also the winningest driver in IMSA history with 54 career victories, coached the team's first-year Lights drivers Oriol Servia, of Spain, and Philipp Peter, of Austria, during the opening two Lights events at Homestead and Long Beach. Servia scored a fourth place finish at Homestead while Peter earned fourth place honors at Long Beach.

"Parker brings to the team a wealth of knowledge from his four years in CART and over 10 years in IMSA as the most successful driver in its history," said Dorricott. "We are extremely pleased to have someone of Parker's ability to assist our drivers."

Johnstone's rich history in racing includes six IMSA championship titles in the Renault Alliance Cup (1985), International Sedan Championship (1987-88), and IMSA Camel Lights (1991-93). After winning three races in four Camel Lights starts in 1990, Johnstone earned eight victories and the Camel Lights title in 1991. He encored by winning seven races and all 13 Camel Lights pole positions in 1992 followed by seven more victories and nine poles in the 1993. He left IMSA competition for CART in 1994 after setting a Camel Lights record 25 wins and 37 poles.

The 37-year-old Oregon native has 45 career race starts in CART. His first two seasons in 1994-95 with Comptech Racing were abbreviated but included winning his first CART pole in 1995 at Michigan International Speedway. He ran his first full CART season in 1996 with Comptech Racing where he earned a career best second place finish at Long Beach. Johnston started 17 races for Team KOOL Green in 1997 and took home over $557,000 in prize winnings. Dorricott Racing's next action will be round three in the 14-race 1998 PPG Dayton Indy Lights Championship at Nazareth Speedway and the Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix, Sunday, April 25.
