CART: Mercedes-Benz and Greg Moore on Pole in St. Louis

23 May 1998

Player's/Forsythe driver Greg Moore scored his second and Mercedes-Benz's third pole position of the year yesterday in St. Louis, but nobody knew it until today. Due to heavy rain which forced the cancellation of two practice sessions and qualifying, the starting grid for tomorrow's Motorola 300 at Gateway International Raceway was set by times posted during practice Thursday.

Although Moore and Mercedes will be credited with the pole position in the record books, the championship point for the pole will not be awarded, and Moore will not receive any Marlboro Pole Award prize money.

Three other drivers using Mercedes power earned spots in the top 10 thanks to their Thursday times. Hogan Racing's JJ Lehto will start fourth, and Team Alumax's Helio Castro-Neves will start eighth, the best start yet for both Champ Car rookies. Al Unser Jr. will start his Marlboro/Penske/Mercedes ninth.

Warm-up is scheduled from 8:45-9:30 a.m. tomorrow, and the race is scheduled to start at 12:15 p.m. local time. ABC-TV's live telecast will begin at 1 p.m. EDT.
