NASCAR GDS: DANA to Sponsor Mike Swaim Sr. in Goody's Dash Race

10 February 1999

Daytona Beach, FL.-Veteran driver Mike Swain Sr. will be stepping back into the drivers seat for the first time in two years on Friday, when he takes the green flag for the Discount Auto Parts 200. He will be driving for long time friend and car owner David Watson in a Dodge Avenger with backing from DANA Corporation. The #12 DANA/Dodge Avenger will be the second entry from David Watson Racing along with the #21 car. The #12 car will also be the only Dodge product in the field.

"This is going to be a lot of fun," said Swain. "This whole deal came together late last week. David called me and said that he had a car if I would drive it. Two days after that DANA signed on with the team and here we are."

Swain SR. has four wins and three poles in the Goody's Dash race here at Daytona International Speedway, the last coming in 1994 when he was also the pole sitter. He also accomplished that feat in 1986.

"Mike has a great feel for this track," said David Watson. "He gets around here (Daytona) as good if not better than anyone. He has won races for me here and that is way, two year lay off or not, he is driving for me this year."

As of now this is a one race deal with DANA on board, but the team is planing on building a V-6 engine and possible competing in a few races later in the year.

DANA Corporation is making a commitment to NASCAR racing in 1999 that is virtually unmatched by any other corporate sponsor. They have two NASCAR Craftsman truck teams with Bobby Hamilton Racing and drivers Butch Miller and Bobby Hamilton, they are an associate on the Kodak #4 NASCAR Winston Cup car, and now a NASCAR Goody's Dash car for Speedweeks 99.

"1999 just keeps getting better," said Armedee Nadeau, Manager of Motorsports for DANA. "We are doing everything we can to make this year the biggest in DANA's history."
