Subaru Reports Strong June Sales

    CHERRY HILL, N.J., July 1 -- Subaru of America, Inc. today
announced its June sales results.  The company reported total unit sales of
10,329.  This marks a 17 percent increase over June 1996 when monthly sales
totaled 8,818.  Year-to-date sales of 55,749 continue to run slightly ahead of
year-to-date 1996 sales of 54,061 (three percent increase).
    Sales of Legacy, the mainstay of the Subaru line-up, increased 11 percent
over June 1996 (7,594 vs. 6,825 respectively).  Subaru Outback, which remains
a popular purchase choice, accounted for 4,703 of Legacy sales.  Subaru
Impreza also enjoyed great success in June.  The subcompact model line sales
totaled 2,620 - a 39 percent increase over June 1996 sales of 1,880.
    Subaru of America, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy
Industries Ltd. of Japan.  Headquartered near Philadelphia, the company
markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a
network of nearly 630 franchised dealers across the United States.  All Legacy
models sold in the U.S., including the Outback, are produced at the company's
American manufacturing plant, Subaru-Isuzu Automotive, Inc., near Lafayette,
Ind.
