Ford Announces Vehicle Campaign

    DETROIT, Aug. 7 -- Owners of certain 1997 and 1998 model-year
Windstar and 1997 model-year Taurus and Sable vehicles equipped with AX4S
automatic transaxles are being notified of a safety recall.
On certain vehicles, the transaxle servo cover may fracture and result in
the loss of transmission fluid. The loss of fluid may cause the transmission
to disengage, causing the vehicle to coast to a stop. In some cases, the
fluid could contact the catalytic converter creating the risk of fire.
However, no fires have been reported.
Approximately 63,500 Windstars are affected by this action, of which 9,000
are located in Canada. In addition, approximately 47,300 Taurus and Sable
vehicles are affected by this action, of which 1,600 are located in Canada.
Owners of affected vehicles are being notified and requested to return
their vehicles to their dealer for inspection of the transaxle and replacement
of the servo cover, if necessary. The work will be completed free of charge.
