Audi A6 Recognized as Finalist in North American Car of the Year Award - Best Import Car

DETROIT, Jan. 5 -- Today, the 1998 Audi A6 placed second in
the North American Car of the Year Award behind the Chevrolet Corvette and
before the Lexus GS 300/400, making it the best import car in this year's
competition. The A6 has only been on sale since early November. This is the
first time an Audi has been named a finalist for this prestigious award.
A group of forty-eight top automotive writers and broadcasters from the
U.S. and Canada chose what they regard as the best new car and truck from a
list of nominees. To be eligible for the awards, the cars and trucks must be
all new or have significant design, structural or mechanical changes from the
previous year. Candidates must meet certain volume and introduction criteria
as well.
The award is based on general design, comfort, safety, fuel economy,
handling and general roadworthiness, performance, innovation, functionality,
driver satisfaction and price. Value for the money, not affordability, is
another important factor. Vehicles are compared to other vehicles in their
class.
The award, now in its fifth year, was presented today on the first
official press day of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit,
Michigan.
