Kia Announces Voluntary Recall for Power Door Lock System

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 12 -- Kia today announced a voluntary
recall of 1997 Sportage sport-utility vehicles for the modification of the
power door lock system.
Kia has found that on 23,493 Sportages manufactured between July 26, 1996,
and Aug. 12, 1997, the power door lock system may malfunction, causing the
power door locks to inadvertently unlock. In no way will a malfunction cause
a door to physically open.
Kia owners are being asked by mail to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealer
so that the dealer can properly modify the power door lock system. The 30-
minute replacement procedure will be done immediately at no charge.
Kia Motors America is the U.S. sales, marketing and distribution arm of
Kia Motors Corp. of Seoul, South Korea.
