United Auto Workers Strike Accuride's Kentucky Plant

HENDERSON, Ky., and NEW YORK, Feb. 24 -- At midnight, Friday,
February 20, 1998, UAW Local 2036 went on strike at the Henderson, Ky.
facility after its three-year collective bargaining agreement with Accuride
Corporation expired. Prior to that time, Accuride presented the Union with a
complete proposal for a new contract that included over $10 million of wage
and benefit improvements over the term of the six-year contract.
The UAW-represented workforce at the Henderson Plant consists of
approximately 430 hourly employees. As of year-end 1997, Accuride's
consolidated workforce was 1,429 with 794 employees in its Canadian-based
operations and 635 employees in the U.S.
Accuride produces steel wheels at three of its plant locations (London,
Ontario, Canada; Henderson, Ky.; Monterrey, Mexico). Almost all of the
products manufactured at the Henderson Plant can be made at another Accuride
location. In addition to building a substantial strike inventory, alternative
sourcing plans have now been implemented. Accuride does not anticipate any
disruption in supporting its customers' requirements. The Henderson Plant
will produce its standard heavy truck and trailer wheels utilizing U.S.
salaried employees.
"While a strike is indeed an unfortunate situation, especially for the
striking workers, Accuride will continue to service its customers in its
usual, outstanding manner," said William P. Greubel, Accuride President and
Chief Executive Officer. "And, while we will continue to bargain in good
faith and strive to reach an acceptable contract, we will not deviate from
what we believe to be the best course of action for our employees, investors,
lenders, owners and community in making the Henderson plant a world-class
operation."
