Rhein Chemie Sends Teacher to Teachers, Industry and the Environment -TIE- Workshop

TRENTON, N.J.--June 24, 1998--In a continuing effort to improve science education in New Jersey, Rhein Chemie Corporation sponsored Emily DeFilippo from Ewing's Antheil Elementary School to attend the Chemical Industry Council of New Jersey's (CIC/NJ) fifth annual Teachers, Industry and the Environment (TIE) Workshop. The Workshop was held on January 29-31, 1998 at the Princeton Marriott. Rhein Chemie Corporation, located in Ewing Business Park, is a Bayer company.
TIE is specifically designed for fifth through eighth-grade teachers, providing hands-on lessons and experiments that they can easily replicate in the classroom. Demonstrations are given by educational specialists, technical experts from CIC/NJ member companies, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and, for the past two years, NASA.
Forty-eight teachers participated in the event, which began with a corporate/teacher reception followed by a day and a half of workshop sessions. The sessions included "Living and Working in Space," "Wonders of Wetlands (WOW)," "Mystery Powders," "Glue and Paper Chromatography," "ToxRAP," and "Hydroponics."
The Hydroponics module, presented by Bob Keenan, director of the Maryland Education Center for Agriculture, Science and Technology, and Fred Stillwagen, from American Cyanamid, became the highlight of the workshop as the teachers actually constructed their own hydroponics kits to take back to their schools.
"The TIE program is a great way for school teachers to gain information and resources to enhance their science curriculum, and it provides excellent support to Rhein Chemie/Bayer's Making Science Make Sense program," said Jerry Rolfsmeyer, Rhein Chemie's Manager, Human Resources. "Rhein Chemie is proud to have been able to sponsor a local teacher to participate in TIE, and we look forward to providing more teachers with this wonderful educational opportunity in the future."
