Southern California Gas Price Average Climbs Two Cents in a Month But Remains Lower Than Prior Year
LOS ANGELES--Dec. 15, 1998--The average price of regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in Southern California rose two cents to $1.20 from $1.18 during the past month, according to the third Automobile Club of Southern California Fuel Gauge Report.
This compares with a state average of $1.20 and a national average of $1.02.
While the average gas price increased by two cents, Southern Californians continue to benefit from an oversupply of crude oil, a relatively warm winter and a lower than expected demand due to sluggish worldwide economies. Overall, the state average price is 19 cents lower than a year ago at the same time. The Energy Information Administration recently predicted that the Asian financial crisis could create lower than projected gasoline prices through the year 2007.
In Southern California, the following averages for regular unleaded self-serve gasoline are the following:

The Auto Club surveyed gas prices during the 1970s and 1980s during the state's gas shortages. When prices and supplies stabilized, the surveys were discontinued. Although there currently is an abundance of fuel supply, the demand for gasoline prices as a consumer service has steadily increased.
The Auto Club's Fuel Gauge Report is based on data gathered from monitoring fuel transactions at 2,800 Southern California gas stations. The data is provided by Oil Price Information Service -- the nation's most comprehensive source of petroleum pricing information.
The Automobile Club of Southern California, the largest affiliate of AAA, has been serving members since 1900. Today, Auto Club members benefit by the organization's emergency road service, financial products, travel agency and trip planning services, highway and transportation safety programs, insurance products and services, automotive pricing, buying and financing programs and legislative advocacy.
