National SAFE KIDS Campaign Collects Vital Data on Car Seat Safety
Advanced automated data collection technology helps to capture accurate
                        information on car seat misuse

SAN MARCOS, Calif., March 11 -- The National SAFE KIDS
Campaign (http://www.safekids.org), the first and only national organization
dedicated solely to the prevention of unintentional childhood injury, will use
an advanced automated data collection technology called TELEform(R) to collect
information its nationwide SAFE KIDS BUCKLE UP(R) Car Seat Check-Up events.
By using TELEform from Cardiff Software (http://www.cardiffsw.com), the Campaign can
quickly provide accurate data on car seat misuse to the agencies and
organizations involved in automobile and car seat safety.
Correct car seat and safety belt usage are among the many safety
initiative addressed by the National SAFE KIDS Campaign. Motor vehicle
crashes are the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among
children ages 14 and under. Each year, more than 1,850 children age 14 and
under die as motor vehicle passengers and approximately 280,000 are injured.
Many of these deaths and injuries can be prevented with the proper use of car
seats. SAFE KIDS BUCKLE UP Car Seat Check-Up events give parents and other
caregivers across the country the opportunity to see if their car seats meet
current standards and if they are being used correctly.
During Check Ups, inspectors use a TELEform-designed form to record
information on the car make; the type, location, and history of the car seat;
and the type of safety belts; as well as how the car seat is being used. The
forms are faxed to a central location for processing by TELEform. TELEform
reads and verifies the data from the forms, and exports the verified
information to a database, where it is used to compile statistical information
far more quickly and accurately than was previously possible.
