ADVISORY/Transportation Secretary Slater and CART CEO Craig to Announce Joint Safety Initiative
--In an effort to underscore their commitment to vehicle safety in communities across the country, U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater and Championship Auto Racing Teams Chairman and CEO Andrew Craig will announce a joint initiative that will deliver safety messages to the American public.
The announcement will be made at Pennsylvania's Nazareth Speedway, where CART, the leading open-wheel motor sports organization, is conducting Round 4 of its 1999 season.
Aimed at educating drivers through promotion and distribution of all vehicle safety information developed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the campaign includes public service messages during television and radio race broadcasts, print messages, and distribution of literature at CART race and Fan Fest events.
In addition, two of CART's championship-winning drivers will be participating in special events and media activities throughout the year.
Slater and Craig will be joined at the announcement by NHTSA Administrator Ricardo Martinez, M.D.; Sam Scott, Ford Racing Marketing Manager; and Champ car drivers Michael Andretti and Jimmy Vasser, who have both taken part in U.S. DOT programs to communicate the importance of vehicle safety information on -- and off -- the track.
