26 Collegiate Teams Vie for Best Miles-Per-Gallon Title in SAE Engineering CompetitionWARRENDALE, Pa., June 10 -- Over 200 engineering students will compete in the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) Supermileage(R) Collegiate Design competition on June 11-12 at the Eaton Corporation Proving Grounds in Marshall, Michigan. Universite de Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada will defend its 1998 title against 25 other teams from Canada, Mexico and the U.S. during the two-day competition sponsored by SAE and Eaton Corporation, a global manufacturer of products that serve industrial, vehicle, construction, commercial, aerospace and seminconductor markets. Sherbrooke will attempt to outperform their 702.74 miles-per-gallon run in last year's competition. Vehicles are judged in two areas: vehicle and powertrain design and engine design. Following technical inspection, teams compete in performance runs to measure fuel economy and to achieve the highest mileage possible. All vehicles are powered by a two-horsepower Briggs & Stratton engine. For twenty-years, Briggs & Stratton, Milwaukee, Wisconsin has donated an engine to each team. The use of the same engine creates a more challenging engineering design test. Supermileage(R) is one of eight collegiate design competitions held each year by SAE throughout North America. Other events include three regional Mini Baja(R) events for off-road vehicles, two Aero Design(R) events for radio-controlled aircraft, a Formula SAE(R) event for mini formula-style race cars, and a Walking Machine Decathlon(R) for robotics.
