Introduction To Karting
4 December 1999
KARTING or go-karting is the MOST popular participant motorsport in the world! An estimated 100,000 drivers race in the US alone! Karting is not just for kids. 2 Time Indianapolis 500 Champion Al Unser, Jr., NASCAR's Winston Cup Rookie of the Year Tony Stewart, 1997 Toyota Atlantic Champion Memo Gidley, Clint and Casey Mears, and NASCAR's John Andretti all got their start in Karting. Many of them still race karts in the off-season to keep their competitive edge. Karting began in the form we recognize in 1956. Art Ingels combined a surplus 2-cycle engine with a sample tubular chassis, semi-pneumatic tires, and a bicycle chain... voilla, the first go-art was ready to race. People were amazed at the quick little machine as Art drove around the parking lots and alleys of Glendale, California. In December of 1957, the first kart club was organized: the Go-Kart Club of America. Chassis requirements were set and classes were organized. Safe, organized kart racing had begun! The next three years, go-karting's growth exploded. In 1960, there were over 100 kart manufacturers in the US and other countries worldwide. Today, racing karts are still produced by a large number of manufacturers worldwide. Karts have become precision racing vehicles with a number of variables that can affect speed and performance. Engine manufacturers include Briggs & Stratton, Tecumseh, Honda, Yamaha, and other importers. Kart racing is not only the most popular participant motorsport, it is also the most affordable. For as little as $1,500, an aspiring driver can join the ranks of those who are discovering the rewards of karting. Drivers can start at an early age... even as young as 6 to 8 years old! By the time these drivers are 18, they have matured into accomplished racers with as many as 10 years of actual experience. Kart Expo International is the nation's oldest and largest show devoted strictly to karting. It is a true "shopping mall of karting", featuring hundreds of exhibits with the latest in karting products and services and also offers valuable seminars. The 1999 Kart Expo International will be held December 3rd and 4th in Covington, KY. (Greater Cincinnati Area)
