Goodyear Run-Flat Tires Featured On BMW 7-Series 'Protection'
AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 22 -- Prestige German automaker BMW AG has
approved a Goodyear run-flat tire as original equipment on two BMW
"Protection" models to be introduced in January.
The new Goodyear Eagle NCT5 EMT 235/55R17 run-flat tire, designed
specifically for the BMW 740iL, and 750iL Protection models, operates
effectively without inflation pressure for up to 187 miles at 50 mph. The
17-inch tire achieves run-flat capability without noticeable tradeoffs in
performance, handling or comfort, a BMW prerequisite.
The BMW fitment aligns with Goodyear's strategy to introduce run-flat
technology simultaneously in the original-equipment and replacement tire
markets. The new tire also fits BMW's unprecedented level of protection
without compromising the model's legendary driving characteristics.
Goodyear also supplies run-flat tires as original equipment on the BMW
540i Protection vehicle. Another Goodyear brand, the Dunlop SP Sport 2000 E
DSST run-flat tire, also is specified on the BMW 540i.
"Goodyear and Dunlop continue to respond to automaker and consumer
concerns about tire performance capabilities, convenience and safety," said
Bryan Kinnamon, vice president of North American original-equipment tires.
"Our commitment to run-flat capability on affordable, conventional wheels is
paramount to the technology's future."
Kinnamon said Goodyear's run-flat tires on the BMW Protection models are a
natural. "Owners of these vehicles seek increased security. Roadside tire
changes and handling problems caused by rapid air loss are eliminated,"
Kinnamon said.
Goodyear and Dunlop run-flat technology features reinforced sidewalls that
bear the weight of the vehicle when the tire is deflated. The BMW models use
a low-pressure sensor system to alert drivers when a tire is losing air,
because the tire performs so similar without inflation, drivers might be
unaware of the inflation loss.
"Our self-supporting tire strategy avoids the competition's reliance on
costly, special wheels that complicate the consumer's desire to avoid being
stranded along the road with a flat tire. We want as many people as possible
to experience the safety and feelings of confidence riding on a Goodyear or
Dunlop run-flat tire," Kinnamon said.
In 1992, Goodyear pioneered run-flat technology as an option on the 1994
Chevrolet Corvette. The world's largest tiremaker also invented a run-flat
tire for the 1997 Plymouth Prowler.
Automotive News magazine named Goodyear and its run-flat tires as winners
of its prestigious PACE Awards this year, recognizing automotive supplier
innovation and technology. The tire company also expanded its replacement
run-flat tire line to eight sizes this year to fit many popular vehicles on
the road.
